Golf in Cambodia - Asia's newest golfing destination!

Golf in CambodiaGolf holidays in Cambodia are a new introduction, yet pioneerng golfers are finding it a fascinating country in which to play a few rounds. Golf is a relatively new pastime in Cambodia yet is developing fast. Until the mid 1990s golf was unheard of in the country, but with its entry in to ASEAN and top Cambodian officials meeting on a regular basis with there contemporaries in the more developed golfing Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand it was only a matter of time until the popularity of golf grew. And what more could a nation ask for as a golfing ‘ambassador’ than the Prime Minister himself – yes Cambodia’s Premier Hun Sen, is an avid golf player with a handicap of 15.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia's laid back capital, has 2 full scale 18-hole golf courses on its western outskirts. However, the real golfing excitement is in Siem Reap, the home of the magnificent Angkor Wat temples. In early 2007 the Sofitel Phokeethra Country Club opened, and this was followed in early 2008 by the Nick Faldo designed Angkor Golf Course - it is claimed this course could emerge as not only the finest in Cambodia, but one of the best in the Asia-Pacific region.

Below please find a brief description of Cambodia Golf Courses, along with a full list of suggested Cambodia golf vacation packages.

Angkor Golf Course

Nick Faldo brings world class golf to Cambodia with the PGA standard championship Angkor Golf Course which boasts a lengthy 7,230 yards and a 72 par. Located close to the heart of Siem Reap, the Angkor Golf Course features generous fairways, an impressively bold bunkering style, and greens with plenty of subtle undulations that not only encourage but reward a variety of approach shots. Faldo believes that golfers enjoy themselves most when they are challenged, and this is the underlying approach to his design style. However, at the same time he is fully aware of the wide range of abilities that golfers bring to the course and as such the Angkor Golf Course has plenty of teeing options. Taking into account the stunning natural surroundings the course has a commitment to protecting the environment. A fair but challenging course for all golfers. Phokeethra Country Club

Located 15km west of Siem Reap, Cambodia’s first internationally managed golf course, Phokeethra Country Club opened in early 2007 and has a par of 72 and stretches 7,145m. The picturesque, undulating course has sweeping, tree-lined fairways and generous greens, however the ever present natural lakes and water hazards, fast greens, and tricky bunkers challenges players of all abilities. Whilst playing you are never far away from reminders of the magnificent Angkor Empire as the course features the 10th century stone ‘Roluh’ bridge, a direct link to the country’s glorious past. As the course is part of the Sofitel group you can expect their renowned levels of 5 star service, and for those who stay at the Sofitel Royal Angkor Golf & Spa Resort whilst in Siem Reap special golfing privileges and discounts are offered. Royal Cambodia Golf Club

The Royal Cambodia Golf Club lies 10km west of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s charming capital city and was the first 18 hole golf club to open in the country. The 7,075 yard course is set in an attractive environment sitting amongst rice paddies and coconut palms. The course is rather flat yet it still provides a challenge with numerous sand and water hazards, including a large lake near the third hole! Being the closet course to Phnom Penh it is popular with local dignitaries, and it is said it is the Prime Minister’s preferred course - perhaps due to the fact he got a hole-in-one here in 2004! Not of the same quality as the Siem Reap courses but playing a round here gives you an insight of the development of golf in less developed countries. Cambodia Golf & Country Club

The Cambodia Golf & Country Club is located 35km west of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s charming capital city, and was the second 18 hole golf course to open in the country in 1996. The 7,000+ yard course is in a pleasant rural setting surrounded by palm trees, native fruit trees, evergreen plants and beautiful flowers, with a sprinkling of rocks. With a backdrop of distant mountains it is a delightful location. The course is relatively challenging with a large number of bunkers to keep you alert. Not of the same quality as the Siem Reap courses but playing a round here gives you an insight of the development of golf in less developed countries.
