The Cambodia Trust is committed to assisting people with disabilities regain mobility and live equally within society. Their free help extends to people affected by polio, landmine/unexploded ordnance, cerebral palsy and 'clubfoot'. Their first rehabilitation centre was opened in 1992 and there are now three centers operating in Sihanoukville, Kompong Chhnang and Phnom Penh. Each of the centers provides; physiotherapy, prosthetic limbs and orthopedic braces, wheelchairs and other assistive devices. The Cambodia Trust also operates various support services including: supporting disabled children from poor families to attend school and providing their schoolbooks, uniforms and bicycles; assisting people set up small businesses and establish self-help groups so they have the opportunity to exchange ideas and advocate for themselves; and running an education centre, the Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, where people learn to make and fit prosthetic limbs and orthopedic braces.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPERIENCE...
Asia Adventures can arrange for you to spend a morning or afternoon visiting the Cambodia Trust’s rehabilitation centre in Phnom Penh. Here you can see how prosthetics and orthotics are made and fitted to amputees, and learn about the complications of working with growing children. You will also have the opportunity to talk with the patients and find out more about their lives, and meet with students from other countries affected by landmines who are being training to become prosthetic and orthotic technicians. If you are lucky you may get to watch an impromptu disabled volleyball or football game, demonstrating just how resilient these people are.
