A legacy of Cambodia’s 30 years of strife is that certain parts of rural Cambodia are still littered with landmines resulting in Cambodia having one of the highest amputee rates in the world. Unfortunately, people with disabilities suffer from an extremely low status in Cambodia and it is very difficult for them to gain employment and recognition that they have something positive to offer society. The National Centre for Disabled Persons aims to improve the financial situation and living standards of people with disabilities, such as amputees, and cerebral palsy and 'clubfoot' sufferers, particularly women. The organisation was launched in 1997 and is run by disabled people for disabled people, helping them regain dignity and lead a normal life. The NCDP has 5 projects directly benefiting over 1,800 people each year and supports disabled people in all aspects of handicraft production including design, manufacturing, quality control, and a venue to display and sell their products. This venue being the NCDP’s retail outlet in Phnom Penh. Here visitors can browse the offerings knowing that any purchases they make will enable disabled people throughout Cambodia to be self-employed and earn a much needed income to support their families.
