In common with many developing countries Cambodia is still a very male dominated society / culture, and women who, through no fault of their own, find themselves on the wrong side of the tracks are often abandoned and forgotten. NYEMO was established in 1998 and works with abused women, women who were forced into prostitution, and women who are suffering with HIV / AIDS, as well as helpless and orphaned children. It aims to provide vulnerable women with the necessary means to regain their dignity, reintegrate back into the workforce and society, and participate actively in the development of Cambodia.
NYEMO’s activities revolve around a drop-in centre, which provides support services and assists the women. The center also provides counseling, food, day care, temporary shelter, access to public health care facilities, basic education, job placement services, micro-credit finance to start a small business, and targeted vocational training. Women involved in the reintegration program can choose from a number of vocational training courses, such as: cooking & cleaning; sewing & embroidery; dress making & sewing; traditional silk weaving; and laundry & pressing. All products made by the trainees, previously unskilled and unemployed women, are sold in NYEMO’s boutiques. This ensures that the women are not simply beneficiaries of NYEMO’s services, but empowered active partners. Currently NYEMO has two boutiques in Phnom Penh, one with a restaurant, and one more boutique in Siem Reap. By purchasing any of the full range of Khmer gifts such as, handbags, cushion covers, curtains, purses, and soft children's toys you are helping mothers help themselves and their children by creating jobs for them.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPERIENCE...
Asia Adventures can arrange for you to have an Asian or European three course lunch at NYEMO’s Le Rit’s Restaurant, set in a beautiful garden. Here there is also a boutique displaying a wide variety of traditional Khmer silk handicrafts made by the women. If you are interested we can also arrange for you to visit the workshop where you can chat with the women as they work and discover how much the assistance of NYEMO means to them, as well as meeting the children and learning about their recreational and educational activities.
