Phnom Chisor Temple
Phnom Chisor is the large hill that dominates the surrounding flat rice paddies about 60km south of Phnom Penh. To reach the top of the hill involves overcoming 500+ steps but there are various places to buy drinks on the way! As you reach the top you will see that the effort was certainly worth it, initially you will notice a modern pagoda, however further on you will discover the nicely preserved 11th century temple ruins built during the reign of Suryavarman I. The temple was once of some significance as it housed one of four sacred linga installed by the king to mark the boundaries of his empire. From the eastern entrance there are outstanding views of endless rice paddies below. Here you will also see the original (and very steep) stone staircase leading from two gatehouses that still remain in the distance down amongst the rice fields. This region is well known for its silk weavers, and back at the base of the hill you can visit a small silk weaving school set up by a local organisation to pass this traditional skill onto the younger generations. |
