Kep is Cambodia’s secret idyllic seaside haven, a sleepy town backed by hills covered with lush jungle and overlooking the sparkling turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Established in 1908 Kep was originally built as a retreat for the French colonialists and was known as the ‘Riviera of Asia’. For 60 years it thrived as Cambodians favourite coastal holiday resort, its heyday being the 50s and 60s. Yet during the 1970s it fell into ruin as the Khmer Rouge systematically gutted and burnt the modernist villas seen as symbols of capitalism. Only in the past few years has Kep begun to experience a revival as its beauty and tranquillity has been rediscovered, and some of these buildings have been restored to their former glory as beautiful hotels and guesthouses. These along with the emergence of restaurants and bars means that today Kep offers a wide variety of cuisine, yet Kep has always been famed for its seafood, and a visit to a beachside vendor where the fisherman bring in their fresh catch is a must.

Only 5km offshore is Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island), and a day trip makes for a pleasant excursion relaxing on its beautiful beaches, or further explore this small undeveloped island and stay overnight in basic but charming beachfront accommodation. Kep is also the perfect base for visiting the nearby historic and picturesque town of Kampot, exploring the many caves that desiccate the surrounding limestone hills, and visiting the nearby world famous aromatic Kampot pepper plantations.

A highlight of any visit to Kep are the stunning sunsets and there are many wonderful places to experience these, maybe at a beachside bar, a guest house balcony perched on the side of a hill, the former king’s ruined residence, or perhaps a gin and tonic at the Sailing Club.
