Cambodia - the jewel of South East Asia...
Experience a holiday in Cambodia and discover the allure of an unspoilt and little explored country which for many travellers with a sense of adventure is irresistible. Undoubtedly Cambodia’s number one attraction are the stunning ancient temples of the 'Lost City’ of Angkor Wat, which are an overpowering sight and unrivalled for scale and grandeur in the whole of South East Asia - a must-see for any visitor. Your first glimpse of Angkor Wat, which represents the full flowering of Khmer genius, will be a breathtaking experience, matched by only a few places on earth such as the Great Wall of China or the Taj Mahal. Visiting these ancient temples with towering spires, giant carved faces, and ornate bas-reliefs, will transport you in time and spirit - a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all, and a spiritual discovery for many.
Whilst most visitors are satisfied just to experience the magnificent Angkor temples whilst in Cambodia, many make a visit to Phnom Penh, the country's capital. A beautiful city with crumbling French colonial architecture, a splendid palace, an eye-catching riverside promenade, and a great selection of restaurants and bars. However, few make it much further and miss out on some wonderful ‘hidden’ gems of this captivating country. For those with an adventurous spirit Cambodia has so much more to offer than its temples. The south coast is dotted by near-deserted tropical islands where you can have a white sand beach all to yourself, as well as being home to the seaside resorts of
Sihanoukville and Kep; the mighty Mekong river cuts through the country and its waters contain some of the region’s last remaining freshwater dolphins near Kratie; the ghostly, often mist shrouded, abandoned 1920s casino resort on Bokor Mountain makes a refreshing change; South East Asia’s largest lake, the Tonle Sap, which is home to many fascinating floating villages, as well as being fed by a river that flows ‘uphill’ for part of the year are sights to behold; as is the laid back ‘second city’ of Battambang lying in the heart of Cambodia’s ‘rice basket’, affording wonderful opportunities to witness unspoiled rural Cambodia and the locals simple lifestyles; and last but by no means least the northeast provinces of Ratanakiri and Mondolkiri - another Cambodia entirely where you will witness rolling landscapes which are home to Cambodia’s diminishing ethnic minorities and a diminishing wildlife.
As well as these man-made and natural sights Cambodia is renowned for its precious culture and fascinating history. It would be almost sacrilegious if you left Cambodia without witnessing a mesmerising
Apsara dance performance or a lively shadow puppet show, and as Buddhism and pagodas are so central to the Cambodian way of life a visit to a local wat is a must. It is said that the Cambodian people are the friendliest and most likeable in the region, and bearing in mind the harrowing recent past that many of them have had to endure, only securing peace in the late 1990s, this is a true testament to their strength of character.
